Trans-Siberian Orchestra Fiserv Forum Concert reviews
The Color Forgettable!
On our way in, there were a couple of employees of the theater shouting "NO FANTASIA," apparently she had been hospitalized but was going to be available for the evening performance tomorrow. First, it was still very hard to find the theater and when we arrived at the venue, it was teeming with people.
I wasn't there to see Fantasia, but was okay with this. The theater seemed more like a venue to hear Tony Robbins or a politician rather than a venue for a touring musical. When we parked, we took an enormous hike to the theater in the McCormick Place convention center.
The performance had begun just a couple of minutes after the stated showtime when we arrived. What I saw was different than the movie (which is fine). The first act ended with Shug and Celie finding the letters. During intermission, we had to go out of the small theater lobby to the larger convention outer area and get a beverage and chips. The convention center was humid and uncomfortable. When we returned for the second act, it was odd as the audience started to leave during the finale. This is the first time I had seen this. I was amazed that people wouldn't stay until the end.
The musical was largely forgettable and there wasn't one song that stuck with me. Considering that it was 90% singing and very little dialogue, this made it a less than stellar experience.
I don't know what all the hoopla about this musical is, and frankly, I'm embarrassed for Oprah as she has put her name on this. There was also a larger emphasis on the lesbian aspect of Shug and Celie's relationship.
Spend your money on re-renting the film.
